Best performing small metro areas of 2014

The initiatives and work of the Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation (GSDC) and our regional community partners are affirmed by a national economic development organization, the Milken Institute.

The St. Cloud region has been recognized by Milken as a best-performing “small city” in 2014. The nonprofit, nonpartisan economic think tank in Santa Monica, California publishes an annual ranking of small and large Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). The St. Cloud MSA is comprised of Benton and Stearns counties and includes all communities located in those counties.

Milken’s annual ranking includes the top 200 large MSAs and the top 179 small metro areas in the nation. In the 2014 report, the St. Cloud MSA, considered a small metro area, garnered the ranking of 26, an increase over its rankings of 30 in 2013, 78 in 2012 and 114 in 2011. The index ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. The components include job, wage and salary, and technology growth. In most years, these give a good indication of the underlying structural performance of regional economics. The full report is available at Milken Institute Best-Performing Cities 2014.
